Here are five(5) must-try list for the local Singaporean food you should try for yourself when you visit Singapore.

1. Singapore Chicken Rice

Top on the list is Chicken rice, Singaporean local favourite is the dish that has been touted as a national dish by some food critics. The roasted chicken with rice and garlic cooked in stock, you can choose either to have a portion of roasted chicken or have the chicken steamed. Add a dash of chilli sauce and dark soy sauce, the chicken rice dish is delicious and is a very filling meal.  Hainanese chicken rice can be found almost everywhere, in hawker stall or expensive restaurant.

The rich flavor of rice, is well prepared and boiled in chicken stock and the tender chicken meat, this dish is as flavorful as it is fragrant. It usually comes with garlic, pepper, and chilli sauce, ginger with soup that is made of chicken. Diners can enjoy soup or broth, with chicken and a stock added to its mixture along with some herbs to top it off.

2.  Singapore Sling

Cocktail was created by the Long Bar of Raffles Hotel in the original early 20th century. The original recipe, gin, cherry brandy and benedictine is what is mostly used formula, however, different countries mix these up a bit and change them. The drink is stirred in before adding soda, and serve in glasses. While on board Singapore airlines you can taste the same drink and at some bars here in Singapore.

3.  Laksa

Although there are many versions of this dish, Singapore’s version has its Peranakan roots in the Perkanakan community. Shrimp rice noodles, are made in a coconut sauce and spicy gravy and sprinkled with prawns, chicken and fish cake. Rich and luxurious dish, leaving you craving for more. Laksa, that is prepared with noodles that are made from flour in curry gravy that is in turn made of spices, herbs, dried shrimp, coconut milk and red pepper/chilli. It is served with fish cakes, and is accompanied by cockles and prawns that make it a perfect combination.

4.  Indian Rojak

Rojak is used to refer to a combination of some of the broad component ingredients. In Singapore, there are Indian and Chinese rojaks. Rojak serve by the Indian community is usually dishes that comes with vegetables, bean curds, fried dough mixtures and seafood served with a spicy and sweet peanut sauce.

5.  Satay

If you’re familiar with the kebab skewer Mediterranean style then this is the local version of satay skewers of meat. You can choose from a variety of chicken, mutton or beef served with peanut sauce. Satays are small bittings of meat consisting of mutton, chicken that is dipped in a sweet sauce that includes peanuts. Side dishes include cucumbers, steamed rice dumplings, sliced onions, ketupat and peanut sauce.
